Before we go into a full tutorial we answer some frequently asked questions.
gnubhaaratii is a suite of software for indian language enabled use of computers by people.
We have put this on a live CD i.e bootable CD that will not require a computer to have a harddisk. In addition, it can also be booted from a hard disk.
What is gradual migration?
Many people are used to proprietory software and have a natural resistance to change. We expect people to migrate to free software gradually. So if one has a proprietory software on their Harddisk and do not venture to change suddenly , one can simply bypass the harddisk and work with gnubhaaratii software and familiarise. Once confident , then one may even install the same on one's harddisk.
One can use one's harddisk or one may use a floppy, zipdrive or one may use USB pendrive etc.
Can one use one's
old files, data?
Yes
very much.
Except some very rare formats. For example, most of the formats
produced by Microsoft
Office can be straight away read by and saved in by the software in
gnubhaaratii.
Before you start this CD ensure
Boot Sequence: You have a CD ROM drive that can be bootable. This is partly a hardware requirement. Most modern computers(released in last year or so) have this hardware ability. Then comes the software setting. CD becomes bootable when the setup has boot sequence wherein CD comes before Harddisk. This setting is done in CMOS. You may have to set it up sometimes. The setup of boot sequence can be achieved by pressing DEL ( on Award BIOS or usual desktop computers) or F12 (on Compaq or such laptops) while machine is booting. Choose from the 'advance bios ....????' menu, 'Advanced BIOS features'. Change first boot device as CDROM ( and you may add the sequence of other devices as you want) Save changes ( by pressing F10 or some such key )
RAM requirement: Presently our CD requires above 192 or say 256 MB RAM . (This is because 'swap' is not enabled. Our future versions are expected to make do with 128 MB or even 64 MB or less.
Harddisk: This CD does not need a harddisk to be present. However if present the same may be used temporarily for swap. If no harddisk is present, then RAM requirements are high.
Storage device: There should be some device to store your data. This could be a floppy drive or flash memory or a harddisk or some device on network.

This is an experimental CD and is fast evolving. We call it '0.4 alpha1' version. Full version will be named 1.0.
Now you have the power of
computing in
your own languages. At this stage we have some applications in Hindi,
Marathi and Gujarati in addition to English. We propose to also cover
Tamil, Malayalam and Bangla soon. Rest of the Indian languages
thereafter.

2.
Work on web in Indian Languages:
Browser:Mozilla
Mozilla comes with a browser which can be used to view webpages (including the Indian languages) on internet.
E-mail:Mozilla
Mozilla also provides a full fledged e-mail application which allows you to write and view e-mails offline (i.e. without necessarily being connected to internet all the time). So you just need to download all your e-mails once and then view them later on.Recently it has been enabled for Indian languages which means you can now write and view e-mails in your own language.

Introduction
This version is very
celebrated and
widely used programming environment authored by Prof Seymore Papert
of MIT. The author has been an advisor of US presidents over scores of
years. However he is a deep (though scathing) criticiser of our
educational system.(Who is not?) He is also an author of
seminal treatises on role of computers in education which include 1>
Mindstorms: Children ,Computers and Powerful Ideas, 2> Children's
Machine : rethiking school in the age of computers .
Very often
this program is taught too early in schools ( say std 3 to 5) before
children can understand concept of a variable (only after std 7). And
the 3-D features that newer version has is rarely brought to students
attention. One may note that Dr Pavanaja has translated this in
Kannada.
This software is available for free download from
www.softronix.com . A number of gnu/linux versions are floating but
don't seem to have the same ease and elegance apart from features as
in MSWLogo. Hence , it was thought of including the same in this CD .
It is also an illustration of the fact that a software written for a
proprietory Operating System can however be run on a free operating
system including the multimedia .
How to start ?
1.
Look on
the desktop. You will see an icon of various Educational packages
then you select "MSW LOGO". click on it
2. Wine
launch window will appear. click on dismiss.
3. about MS
Logo screen appears. click ok.
4. Ms logo application will
start.
